⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Lie Ren
Age: 19
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: Post Volume 5

Background: Ren's Wiki Page

Personality:
While once a naive and bubbly child, watching parents get killed and his hometown slaughtered right before his eyes caused Ren to understandably grow to be a quiet and serious person. Taking his father’s final words to never not take action to heart and seeking revenge on the monstrous Grimm that took his family from him, Ren eventually goes on to attend Beacon to become a huntsman. He takes his studies very seriously and works to get better so he can protect others, though he’s still a teenager and enjoys juvenile activities like ridiculous food fights and school dances.

His playfulness is shown best with his childhood friend/more, Nora Valkyrie, whom he jokes with quite easily. While he’s no social butterfly, he’s dedicated to those he becomes close to, and without a doubt he’s the closest to Nora, who ultimately helped shape him into the man he is today. When the two first met, he failed to protect her from a group of bullies. After his father’s parting words, Ren risks his life to get keep her safe from the Grimm even though he was only a child himself. From then on out, it was the two of them against the world. Whereas Ren tends to pull his emotions inside, Nora, ever the optimist, remains peppy even in the most dire cases, acting as his light. When things get to be too much for him, she’s there to support him and talk sense into him, knowing him better than anyone. Just as she’s his rock, he’s hers, protecting her as best as he’s able even though she’s much stronger and being the ever present voice of reason.

Similarly, it could be due to his quiet nature or his worldly knowledge, but he’s regarded as wise by a few of his companions. Jaune, his team leader, has been shown to go to him for help. Even when he’s not allowed to interject at all and literally contributes nothing, he’s thanked for the advice. In fact, in most of the earlier volumes Ren barely spoke more than a few sentences the entire season, though recently he’s been shown to be more vocal, seeming to come out of his shell as he grows more familiar with his newer friends, and during less serious moments he’s been known to have some good one-liners. While Nora is still his primary concern, he is shown to be loyal and protective to the rest of both his and Ruby’s team, teaming up with others and rushing to Weiss’ side when she is seriously wounded in a fight.

As the series goes on, Ren’s growing protectiveness with his traveling companions can also be seen through one of his secret talents: cooking. Ren seemingly takes it upon himself to cook a delicious meal when the opportunity presents. This actually starts in the first season with him making pancakes for his teammates, though in later volumes he’s producing meals for 9 without saying a word. He also acts as the team’s “medic”, treating injuries and illness best he can when they strike, though he has no formal training.

One thing that has remained constant throughout the show is Ren’s emotional stability. Rarely one to crack, Ren is the picture of calm. He almost always has an air of neutrality about him, preferring to remain calm and think things through before acting (which might tie back into the gang’s belief that he is the wisest among them). Until recent seasons, he did not emote much, and even now it’s not an overly common occurrence. His serious nature can also land him in some awkward moments, such as when Jaune came to him for advice when he was fresh out of the shower, clad only in a towel. Until later seasons, there were moments where awkward teenager appeared as well, such as when he looked away suddenly when he realized he had an upskirt view of Nora.

Despite his usual rational exterior, Ren has been known to lose control of himself, the most obvious example being when team RNJR encountered the Nuckelavee, the Grimm which murdered his village (though during the trip in the region he was decidedly edgy and clearly not as in control as he normally is). He was very quick to throw himself at it recklessly, not considering his own safety or those around him as he went out for blood. As the team’s attacks grow more futile, he grows more desperate, and it takes Nora to make him see reason. Only after he returns to his normal mindset, albeit with a bit more determination than usual, is the team able to take it down, and Ren able to get his closure. The freedom (and perhaps their interaction during the encounter) granted him the ability to express a touch of physical affection to Nora which, judging from her reaction, had never been done before, the past weighing down on him too heavily.

Abilities:
Aura: Like others from Remnant, Ren has the ability to channel his Aura, the manifestation of his soul, and use it both offensively as an attack on its own or defensively to form a shield of sorts. Aura can also be used to protect users from the elements to some extent, though it does not help with extreme conditions and prolonged exposure. Finally, Aura has been described as being able to act as a warning system, alerting them of danger before they encounter it if they are in tune with it. Ren has been shown to have exceedingly good control of his Aura, having used it proficiently time and time again and noticing an incoming opponent long before any of his companions. Using Aura depletes it, but it is restored on its own over time.

Semblance: An ability unique to him alone, Ren’s Semblance is to mask negative emotions. This can be used on himself or others a distance aways. While covering many people at once might be a bit too much with his usual amount of Aura, Ren is capable of targeting multiple people at a time. This ability can be used not only to ground those targeted, but also render them invisible to creatures which focus on negative emotions, such as the Grimm.

Combat and Athleticism: As a trained Huntsman, Ren is extremely adept at combat; his own style makes him very agile. He possesses well above average strength, though he’s far from the strongest person. He specializes in mid to close combat and is skilled with his own StormFlower, a pair of small automatic handguns with blades blocking his fist, which he can use as a gun, knives, or a boomerang. He’s also been shown able to fight well with a singular dagger at close and midrange. He’s also skilled in martial arts on its own (without his weapons). What he has in skill, he lacks in endurance, and has been shown to tire quickly, though not before he’s able to put on a good show.

Alignment: Sosyne: Calm is Ren’s natural state that’s hard to disrupt. He’s ever rational in his thinking and rarely makes any major actions on emotions alone. Other emotions have been known to slip out from time to time (anger the most noticeable) but he strives to maintain balance, making Sosyne his natural choice.

Other: he's got the moves
